The benefits and opportunities for renewable energy in Arizona are hot news.

Arizona State University is installing solar panels on rooftops. Salt River Project (SRP) is purchasing geothermal power. Arizona Public Service and SRP are receiving biomass electricity, and the list goes on.

Unfortunately, the Arizona Senate has yet to vote on an energy bill that would increase energy efficiency and renewable energy use throughout our state. At least one senator is planning to propose amendments that weaken the bill.

Among other provisions, HB2766 would: * Require school districts to reduce their energy consumption by 10% by July 1, 2011. * Require that school districts, universities, community colleges and state agencies purchase 10% of their energy from renewable energy sources. * Give schools flexibility to use the dollars they save on utilities to pay for capital investments that would help save energy.
